Room 256 in the Kelvin Building, University of Glasgow

Kelvin Building, Room 256 (Dr. J. Malkovich) - Share on Ovi

You know those situations when you see something that slightly deviates from the norm, but your brain just doesn’t immediately process the anomaly? The picture above depicts a door in the Kelvin Building at Glasgow University. A non-descript door much like most other doors in the building, along a lonely corridor. The same paint as the other doors, the same colour scheme. This is the door to Room 256 of the Kelvin Building, a building which houses the Departments of Physics and Astronomy.

What’s the anomaly with the door to Room 256, you ask?

Room 256 belongs to Dr. J. Malkovich.

Not only that, but the seemingly non-descript door to Room 256 also has one glaring difference when compared to other doors in the building.

This door is a third of the size of a normal door.

Do you need any more hints as to what all this is alluding to? For those of you who are still a bit clueless as what I’m blabbering on about, Being John Malkovich. Google it. Also, Wikipedia is your friend.

For those who know the philosophical aspect of the movie and are wondering what the door is doing in a building which is primarily for Physics and Astronomy: the Philosophy lectures take place in Room 257, a lecture theatre in the same building.

If you wish to go looking for the door to Room 256, follow the signs to Room 257, and then follow the signs to the bathrooms. The door to Room 256 is easy to miss because of the unused desks and cabinets which stand on either side on it, so keep looking down at the wall on your left.

Incredibly Minimal and Over-Simplified Synopsis of Movie!! Spoiler!!
In “Being John Malkovich”, the protagonist finds a portal on the 7 1/2 floor of an office building which takes him into the brain of actor John Malkovich, played by John Malkovich. Man finds something cool, shows cool thing to others, everyone abuses the system for personal gain, philosophical debate over wine and cigarettes afterwards. Bring your own beret. The end.

The search for Room 42 continues.

***Update***
Further research online into the matter has turned up surprisingly little. The Glasgow University website offers a limited story of the Kelvin Building, but omits any mention of the anomaly. Other students have also found the door to Room 256. Does anyone have a clue as to the story behind this story?

    Moi,

    Hauska ovi, pitääpä käydä katsomassa!

Olen suomalainen itsekin ja aloitin juuri helmikuun alussa jatko-opinnot Glasgow’n yliopistossa. Oletteko tutustuneet Glasgow’n yliopiston pohjoismaalaisten kerhoon?

    Terv.

    Paula
